Foreign Minister H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan received Foreign Minister of Somalia Abdusalam Hadliye Omer at office Abu-Dhabi on Monday.
Sheikh Abdullah welcomed the Somali minister and discussed with him ties between the two countries and ways to boost cooperation, particularly in military and security affairs.
The Foreign Minister of Somalia lauded UAE’s humanitarian efforts and its stand by the Somali people. He expressed gratitude for the initiatives and projects undertaken by the UAE in that regard.
They reviewed the latest developments in Somalia and the progress of mutual cooperation and coordination. They also exchanged views on a number of topics of mutual interest.
In attendance were Mohamed Ahmed Othman Al Hammadi, UAE Ambassador to Somalia and Major-General Faris Mohammed Ahmed Al Mazrouei, Assistant Foreign Minister for Security and Military Affairs.
Earlier this month, Somalis injured in a terrorist attack on a Mogadishu hotel arrived in the UAE for treatment on the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and follow-up of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
The UAE hosted in Dubai last October the 4th Counter Piracy Conference, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the DP World. Last month, on the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the follow-up of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation launched a project for the extraction of water and construction of the longest pipeline to deliver water to the population in the Hargeisa region of Somalia.
The project aims to alleviate the suffering of the UAE’s Somali brothers and to improve humanitarian conditions. The project began with digging 13 wells to extract water and building giant reservoirs to collect it.
The length of the pipeline which will carry the extracted water from wells is 52 kilometers, with a capacity of more than one million gallons per day, to serve 250,000 thousand people in the city of Hargeisa.
In November 2014, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan headed the UAE’s delegation to the international High Level Partnership Forum on Somalia held in Denmark.
The two-day ministerial meeting, co-chaired by Somalia and the United Nations, aimed to bring together Somalia and over 60 international partners, whether governments or international organisations, to promote the vision of a peaceful, stable and democratic Somalia.
