Unionist politician Buba defects to Somaliland

Storyline:National News

Former Somalia Foreign Minister Ismael Hure Buba has shifted his allegiance to the break-away state of Somaliland making him one of the high profile politicians to break ranks with mainland Somalia after former presidential candidate Prof. Ahmed Ismael Samatar.

Buba was received in Somaliland capital Hargeysa by politicians, businessmen and elders in what could be symbolic for a politician expected to give the northern state some political capital on its secessionist endevours.

Buba was one of the longest serving foreign ministers in Somalia and has been advocating for unionist agendas for more decades.

In 1994 Buba was then foreign minister of Somaliland under president Abdirahman Tur who accepted power-sharing agreement with then Somalia leaders, namely Ali Mahdi Mohamed and Mohamed Farah Aideed.

But now Bubal has joined other high level politician, Prof. Ahmed Ismael Samatar, who in 2012 run for president in Somalia but defected to Somaliland and denounced the union between the South and North which makes up Somalia.

“I am very happy for you to welcome me back in Hargeysa. I don’t want to say much but I will speak later on. I can tell you that I wish Somaliland victory and greatness,” said Buba.
