Al-Shabaab ambushes army convoy in southern Somalia

The militant group Al-Shabaab Monday night clashed with Somali forces in an ambush in Bulo Barako village of Bay region, officials confirmed.

Heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters ambushed the troops who were escorting a convoy carrying food aid leading to heavy fighting, according South West state officials.

Initial reports indicate that at least two government soldiers died in the assault occurred which occurred in Qasahdhere and Baidoa towns.

Minister of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration of the Interim South West Administration Hassan Hussein Mohamed confirmed the attack saying the soldiers repelled Al-Shabaab.

“Al Shabaab fighters attacked the convoy, but they were repulsed and the group has suffered heavy casualties,” said Mohamed.
