Suspected Al-Shabaab fighters have killed a Kenya Police Reservist (KPR) in dawn raid on a private bank and two hotels in Mandera town near Kenya’s border with Somalia.

Residents say the fighters hurled hand grenades at Equity Bank, , Jabane hotel and a food kiosk located opposite Mandera deputy governor’s residential home.

Sources indicate a fierce exchange ensued between the armed men and KPR officers guarding the residence of Deputy Governor leading the death of KPR officer identified as Abdirahman Mohamud.

“The gang of about eight men had planted Improvised Explosive Devices and engaged security agents in shootout before escaping,” said a resident.

Confirming the incident, Mandera County Commissioner Frederick Shisia said the police reservist was killed in the attack on the eatery near the deputy governor’s house.

“The KPR officer who was manning the Deputy Governor Omar Maalim Mohamed’s residence a few meters away was killed by the attackers while they were retreating after shooting at the officers,” said Shisia.

On Monday morning the Police and the Kenya Defence Forces cordoned off all roads leading to Equity Bank, which had one of its walls destroyed and windows shattered.
