Shabaab claims responsibility for murder of sports official

Al-Shabaab militant has claimed the responsibility for the killing of former goalkeeper of the Somali national football team, Abdiweli Olad Qanyare.

Abdiweli was shot dead by gunmen while performing prayer at a mosque in Afgoye town about 30 km far from Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Friday night.

He was also a member of Somalia Federation coaching instructors. The reason behind his killing remains unclear.

On February 18th 2020, a freelance journalist by the name Abdiweli Online working with local media in Mogadishu was shot dead in Afgooye.

Most of the killings happen at Afgoye district in southwest Somalia has been known by Al-Shabab fighters.
