Al-Shabab plans Ramadan attacks, government officials say

With only days left for the Holy month of Ramadan, Mogadishu’s local government officials have warned of fresh threats from Al-Shabab during the month when people are fasting.

The deputy mayor of Mogadishu Mohamed Ahmed Dirie has said Somali police force is keeping alert on Al-Shabab’s plan to harm Somali people and government officials.

“It’s our responsibility to take measures to prevent Al-Shabaab from carrying out Ramadan attacks in the capital,” said Dirie.

He added “We deployed undercover agents to across the capital to find out Al-Shabab members and anti-peace elements who are hiding into the population,” said.

Ramadan is a period of fasting and religious reflection. Al-Shabab militants have chosen the period to carry out attacks against their enemies during the holy month.

Security has been intensified in government installations and International organizations offices in the capital, after recent attacks.

Al-Shabaab fighters have warned they will step up attacks in the Somali capital Mogadishu during the holy month of Ramadan, which started soon.
