Arab League welcmes Somalia’s election process

Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit on Tuesday welcomed Somalia’s election process that culminated in a new parliament which was inaugurated on 27 December 2016.

He congratulated the people of Somalia on the historic achievement saying that the Somali people have “achieved an important success in the election process.”

He called on the Somalia to “work seriously, honestly and interactively to help Somalis restore its status as an active Arab, regional and international entity.

More than 13,000 Electoral College delegates representing Somalia clans have casted their votes for members of the Lower House.

A total of 284 new members of the lower and upper house of the Somali federal parliament were recently sworn in, in the capital Mogadishu.

The lawmakers are to select the country’s president on a date to be announced.

Over twenty candidates are running to become Somalia’s president who will then choose a prime minister.

The incumbent Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is among dozens of candidates vying for the post of president, who will be elected by new lawmakers.
