Attack on Lamu base repulsed, four militants killed-KDF

Kenya Defence Forces said Sunday it successfully repulsed an attack by Al-Shabaab on its military base in the coastal region of Lamu.

In a statement following the 4am attack, KDF said in a statement the forces fought back the militants and that the situation is currently under control.

“This morning at around 5:30 am an attempt was made to breach security at Manda Air Strip. The attempted breach was successfully repulsed. Four terrorist bodies have so far been found,” the statement read in part.

The Kenyan military noted the smoke and fire seen on pictures from the scene emanated from fuel tanks that had been affected during the attack .

“The airstrip is safe. Arising from the unsuccessful breach a fire broke out affecting some of the fuel tanks located at the airstrip. The fire has been put under control and standard security procedures are now on-going,”  the military said.
