A fierce gunfight between Kenya Defense Forces serving under African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and Al-Shabaab fighters broke out Lankura village Somalia’s southern region, Gedo.

Sunday’s battle has erupted after armed Al-Shabaab fighters ambushed a military convoy transporting kenyan soldiers of AMISOM contingent in a remote area close to Elwak town, according to local resident.

“The convoy carrying Kanyan troops hit landmine as they were moving from Dhamasa town towards Elwak town, today,”  said the resident.

The resident who asked anonymity said the ambush began with roadside blast targeted the military convoy, sparking a hours-long firefight between Al-Shabaab fighters and the troops.

“The explosion destroyed an armored vehicle belonging to the troops but we do not know the casualties,” he said.

AMISOM did not comment on the attack, which was the latest in series of attacks by Al Shabaab on AMISOM and Somali troops in southern Somalia.
