Australian Government Gives US 14.3 Millions To Drought-affected African Countries

Foreign Affairs Minister of Australia Ms. Julie Bishop said her country will give out an aid package to the tune of US$ 14.3 million to several African countries affected by drought and conflicts.

In her speech, Ms. Bishop commented that this package is made of food, medical supplies, hygiene materials and water. The aid package will be given to countries such South Sudan, Uganda, Nigeria and Kenya said Ms. Bishop.

The United Nations and IOM Humanitarian Coordinators jointly said over 20 million people are on the verge of death from the beginning of this month due to famine.

The Humanitarian Coordinators have indicated the affected people live in Somalia, Nigeria, South Sudan and pinpointed that US$4.4 million needed urgently in order to avert human crisis.

The humanitarian assistance given to Africa so far by the Australian Government has reached US$450 million in total.
