Two children have been killed and three other sustained injuries on Saturday Afternoon after bomb went off in a village near Kenya’s border with Somalia, official said.

A regional government official David Mbeki said one minor died on the spot while the other succumbed to injuries at the local hospital in an incident which took place in Hareerihosle village in Mandera County.

He said the Kenya Defence Force (KDF) soldiers responded timely and took the injured to hospital.

“Two children were killed and three others critically injured after an explosion went off in a village. Bomb experts have launched investigations into the incident,” Mbeki said.

The locals said the incident happened after after a bomb the children were playing with exploded.

The children were searching for wild fruits in the bush when they came across the bomb and naively started tinkering with it, according to Mohamed Ali Osman, a local resident in Hareerihosle village.

Osman said that three of the children are still nursing serious injuries in the hospital.
“We still don’t know how the bomb got there and we have asked police and army to investigate the incident,” he said.

Dozens of children were killed by landmines and other unexploded military ordnance near Somali-Kenya border since Somalia plunged into civil war in 1990.
