China donates $1.5 million to aid floods relief efforts in Somalia

Chinese government has donated $1.5 milion to Somalia to aid the floods emergency relief efforts in the country.

Chinese ambassador to Somalia Qin Jian said his government responded following reports thousands of people were being affected by the floods.

“China is today donating $1.5 million to Somali government for humanitarian support to deal with the effects of the flood. After I saw from the impact of the floods in the media, this was my answer,” Jian said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Isse Awad thanked the Chinese government for the support noting the donation will go a long way to stem the effects of the drought.

The UN said this past week over 700,000 people had been affected by the floods and 200,000 of them displaced from their homes.

The announced $1 million  support early this month and dispatched a 22 member team led by deputy prime minister Mahdi Guled.
