China gives second food aid to Somalia

Officials from China today in Mogadishu handed over food aid to Somali government officials in the presence of World Food Program staff in.

Federal Minister for Humanitarian Affairs & Disaster Management Dr. Mariam Qassim who was among the officials present in the event touched briefly on the relief aid.

“In this event that we met today follows another one on April2017 which was the first batch of relief aid from Chinese government and this is the second one which weighs 2,800 ton of rice through WFP but this relief is only aimed at Banadir region” said Minister Dr. Mariam.

The food aid is meant for people living in IDP camps on the outskirts of the city that were displaced by the widespread severe drought.

The plan is to cook meals for an estimated 95,000 people per day through feeding centres managed by WFP which is expected to last for 3 months.

Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Qin Jian said his country will continue providing humanitarian aid so long there are needy people in the country.

Minister Dr. Mariam appealed to the Somali people to be dependent upon their strengths in order to be self reliant.
