Clashed clans in Baledweyn accepted cease fire

Two clans agreed to an unconditional ceasefire in Baladweyn town following days of invention and reconciliation by the elders.

Local clerics working with traditional elders, brought together the tow clans to iron out their differences. The meeting was part of a long and successful peace initiative carried out in the town.

After long joint mediation efforts by respected clan elders and clerics, ceasefire and withdrawal of forces from the frontline bases brought into agreement as the two warring clans embrace talks.

Elders Shuriye Hussein Haayow one of the traditional elders who are leading the mediation spoke to Goobjoog News on their efforts to ease the tension between the brotherly clans.

“The sides accepted cease fire and African Union Peace-Keeping Mission (troops) have been deployed in bottled zone. The both sides have an appointment to come the negotiating table” he said.

He added “Elders and the clerics agreed to fine $10,000 whichever side attempts any provocation and the sides agreed to obey”

The two “warring” clans declared their readiness and willingness to discuss the root causes of the dispute. Reaching the ceasefire also required the religious leaders to lead communities in settling the contentious issue of cattle rustling.

Talks between the two warring clans are expected to follow the ceasefire in the presence of the traditional elders and the clerics in quest to end these tensions which recurred in the past decade.

At least 18 people died and 8 others sustained injuries after clan clashes embarked on 19th this month in Baledweyn town.

Dispute over tax collection has flared up street battles in the town, which lasted for five hours.
