Constitutional review kicks off in Galmudug

Storyline:National News

Galmudug parliament today started the review process of the regional state constitution, a month after the formation of the state.

There were 48 MP in the session chaired by speaker Ali Ga’al Asir who requested the assembly to give due consideration to the review. Though the scope of the review is not yet clear, some of the changes might include articles on the state border with Puntland.

According to an article in the charter, Galmudug boundaries run inside Puntland territory, an issue which has angered Puntland forcing them not to recognize Galmudug as a state. Another issue that might be considered in the review is the possible inclusion of Ahlu Sunnah who are likely to demand seat allocations in parliament following the ongoing negotiations with the state government.

The  Federal government and international community have been pushing for good understanding between Galmudug and Puntland and also trying to mediate between Galmudug with Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamah. Ahlu Sunna has seized swathes of land including the designate capital of Galmudug, Dhusamareb and has been expanding its territorial control.
