Earth tremor causes faults along Kenyan highway

By Fauxile Kibet

Earth tremors experienced in several parts of Kenya Sunday have caused cracks on a major highway along Mai-Mahiu – Naivasha, where a major fault was experienced last year.

On Sunday, several Kenyans on Twitter reported feeling tremors and according to the Kenya meteorological department, seismic reports pinpointed the epicenter as Wundanyi in Taita Taveta county which is located about 280km south-east of the capital Nairobi.

The magnitude of the tremor was put at 4.8 on the Richter scale.

The Kenyan Highway Authority on Monday deployed traffic police to direct traffic on the section of the road where the fault occurred as a result of the tremors.

The highway is key as it is the one that trucks ferrying transit goods to Uganda, DRC Congo, and Rwanda. Disruption of the traffic flow was expected to impact on business in general in the East African nation.

Elsewhere, tremors of varying magnitudes were also reported in other parts of the world in Spain, Moluccas and Indonesia.
