A stable Somalia is key to stability in the Horn of Africa region, former President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said.

Speaking at Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies (ACPSS) in Egypt Wednesday, the former head of state who is also a presidential candidate in the upcoming elections called for concerted efforts in the region and the Arab world to contribute to Somalia’s stability.

“History teaches us that it is not possible to achieve stability in the region without the stability of Somalia, and that all ideas of integration and cooperation in the Horn of Africa cannot be realized without equal co-operation between countries in the Horn,” president Mohamud said.

Mohamud who is also the UPD party leader reiterated Somalia’s pivotal role in the Horn of Africa and the Arab world. He noted to regain Somalia’s position, there was need to promote ‘the strategic and historical relationships with the major Arab countries without losing the cordial relationship with our neighbors based on respecting the mutual interests.’

During his time in office between 2012 and 2016, President Mohamud championed regional cooperation and elevated Somalia’s position in the global arena.  Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies (ACPSS) is an Egyptian research institute specializing in political science since its creation in 1968
