Federal gov’t tells Jubaland both interior ministries will approve the elders

The federal government of Somalia has yesterday issued a statement on election process in Jubbaland, says the federal interior ministry and Jubaland interior ministry must approve the list of traditional elders who will select the regional MPs.

In the general principles, the ministry of interior of affairs and reconciliation has set the platform for the selection of Jubaland member’s f parliament and the presidential election of Jubaland.

“To assert the role of women in the council of representatives in Jubalande each community that have three seats must allocate one seat for woman, and if a community have five seats they must designate two seats for women,” reads the statement.

The statement concludes that the venue of the presidential election will either be held at the Jubaland Police Academy or the United Nations compound in order to facilitate the election process and the participation of international observers in the beginning until the end.

Jubbaland administration who has responded to the federal government statement says the federal government will have no role in holding the region’s leadership election in August; Jubaland regional electoral commission will be solely responsible for the process, selection of MPs and venue.
