At least five people were killed in a deadly bomb attack Sunday when a vehicle loaded with explosives blew up at a busy street in Mogadishu’s central business district.

Internal Security spokesman Ahmed Mohamud Arab told the media as the scene five people had been killed and ten others injured. “We can confirm the death of five people and ten others have been injured. Investigations are already underway,” said Arab.

The explosion which went off in the middle of the road along Maka al-Mukarama road also destroyed vehicles and shops along the road. Pictures from the scene show wreckage of vehicles which were parked along pavements.

It was not immediately clear if the target was Waberi police station which is located just few metres away from the scene of the explosion. The city has experienced relative calm in the last one month since the deadly series of explosions during the Ramadan period in June.

The government put up a multi-agency stabilisation force for Mogadishu which has been engaged in several security operations in the past months. Prime Minister Hassan Khaire in a meeting with the force Friday thanked them for the work they had done in keeping the city save. “The city is safe today because of you. I wish to thank you for your commitment,” the PM said.
