Former Mogadishu Mayor Thabit Abdi has secured registration for his new political party adding to the increasing number of political parties being given the nod by the electoral body NIEC.

The People’s Power Party (PPP) was granted an interim certificate of registration Saturday and was received by its chairman Abdullahi Elmi Ereg.

Thabit who is out of the country told Goobjoog News by phone his party is anchored on the understanding that sovereign power of the state is in the hands of the people.

“A country can only develop and prosper if power is in the hands of the people. A people who do not have power cannot develop. Empowering Somali people is our job,” said Thabit.

Thabit who also doubled as Banaadir regional governor in 2017 said he will be coming to the country soon for the launch of the party.

There are now over 30 political parties with interim registration. Cabinet approved the Political Parties Bill last week which is crucial in anchoring party formation and governance in law.
