Galmudug lashes at Fed Speaker for visiting Dhusamareb, warns move could derail peace efforts

Galmudug state has raised eyebrows over the visit of Federal Parliament Speaker Osman Jawari to the state capital Dhusamareb noting the visit was a threat to peace and stability in the region.

The state said the speaker’s visit was designed to undermine the ongoing talks between Galmudug state and the moderate Islamist group, Alhu Sunna Waljama’a under the auspices of the regional body IGAD and UN Support Mission to Somalia, UNSOM.

Jawari today led a team of about 30 Federal MPs to Adado which hosts the state government headquarters but Galmudug has read the visit as suspect aimed at seeking extension of parliament beyond the mandated August 2016.

“It is our view that the overall aim of the Speaker in his partaking of a parallel effort at this time is to derail the prospects of 2016 elections and to make the extension for the mandate of the parliament as a Fait Accompli,” read a statement from Galmudug state.

The regional state said a manipulation of the electoral process leading to an extension is contrary to the UN Security Council Resolutions and the outcomes of the National Consultative Forum.

At the time of the visit, Galmudug president Abdikarim Guled was hosting his Jubbaland counterpart Ahmed Madobe in Adado.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and regional government presidents will converge tomorrow in Bosaso, Puntland to mark the second anniversary of the election of Abdiweli Gaas as the leader of Puntland.
