Goobjoog Media Group Editor Abdiaziz Gurbiye has been sentenced to six months in jail and a fine of $200.
Banaadir Regional Court found the journalist guilty of ‘publishing false news’ under a 1964 law which President Farmaajo had pledged it will no longer be used to criminalize journalism.
It was not immediately clear if the sentence has an option of a fine. According to the Article 328 of the Penal Code which the journalist was charged under, a guilty verdict attracts between 6 months and 3 years jail term.
Gurbiye who is also the deputy director of Goobjoog Media Group was led to the Central jail to begin his jail term.
