IGAD Emergency Meeting on South Sudan Expected Soon.

The Prime Minster of Ethiopia Halemariam Desalegn has appealed for an emergency meeting in Ethiopia next week on the complex situation of Sudan South.

An official letter sent by Desalegn to the President of South Sudan pointed out the ongoing unrest and fighting in his country even though there was prior agreement to cease hostilities on re-invigorateion of the national dialogue committee which the president himself proposed in 2016.

Desalegn depicted his frustration on the ugly humanitarian problems present in South Sudan while fighting and turmoil is going on between the government and the rebels.

“Fighting still continues further worsening the humanitarian situation,” Desalegn said.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister who is also head of IGAD said permanent solution must be reached on the situation in South Sudan and the need for unanimous voice to be raised by the leaders of the region. IGAD mediated the 2015 peace agreement.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is an eight-country trade bloc in Africa. It includes governments from the Horn of Africa, Nile Valley, and the African Great Lakes. Its headquarters are in Djibouti City.
