Inter-University tournament set for November 10- Basketball Federation

Inter-universities basketball tournament, the first in more than 25 years will kick of November this year, the National Basketball Federation has announced.

Federation President Abdullahi Noor Adani told Goobjoog News the move seeks to bring back the glory of basketball in Somali universities which was at its pick in the 1970s and 80s.

Adani said the Federation will from now engage in a capacity building programme among basketball coaches in close collaboration with universities in the country.

“We need to impart them with knowledge and skills to be able to build strong teams in readiness for the November 10 tournament,” said Adani.

The President who spoke following a meeting with representatives from various universities in Mogadishu this week called on universities to sign up for the tourney to promote the sport.

Anas Ali Mohamed, the Secretary General of Universities Association for Somali Olympic Committee welcome the Federation’s idea and promised his full collaboration.

University basketball teams in the 1970s were even more competitive than the national team, one time winning in the Arab Basketball League.

Adani said the Federation will also extend the tournaments to include schools and regions in the country.
