Internal security minister call for respect for Baladweyne agreement

Somali internal security minister, Abdirisack Omar Mohamed has called for a “strict respect of engagements” pledged in a peace deal to end the Baladweyne clan clashes.

The minister said the sides should preserve the agreement reached in Baladweyne town and strongly reconfirm government commitment to sustainable peace and stability in the town.

“Federal government welcomes the peace deal signed by clans in baladweyne, I call upon both clans to strictly respect what they have agreed” he said.

On Friday the negotiators in Baladweyne peace talks agreed to create a buffer zone to separate the two clan militias and withdraw heavy weapons and deployment of SNA and AMISOM troops into the area between the two sides.

The deal reached by representatives of the two clans brokered by federal government together with traditional elders marks an effort to add substance to the ceasefire agreement that was signed last week but has been broken hours prior to the arrival of the mediators from the federal government.
