International youth-day marked in Somalia

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and and UN Special envoy Nicholas Kay yesterday joined hundreds of sports fans in Mogadishu to commemorate United Nation annual Youth Day.

The UN’s annual international day comes at the time many Somali youth face severe unemployment as well as other challenges.

Somali president appealed to the youth to be patient with his government and called them to be contribute towards nation building. “Youth should always think of the development of the nation , some say youth played destructive role, today you play your role in building this nation. I know today you face three enemies, terrorism, piracy and immigration,” said Mohamud

United Nation’s General Secretary’s Special Representative to Somalia Nicholas Kay stressed the importance of youth to world and country.

In recent years, the importance of youth participation in civil society has been increasingly recognized. Today, 122 governments around the world have adopted national youth policies that focus on empowering young people.

Over 70% of Somali population is estimated to be youth and without investing and organizing could prove easy prey for all as we seen for the last 25 years.
