Kenya plans to reopen the border with Somalia

The government of Kenya revealed plans to reopen the Lamu section of Kenya to Somalia border following Large-scale fishermen in Lamu County and trader’s requested to resume the trade between the two countries

The Kenyan government closed border with Somalia in June last year over COVID 19 pandemic, some of the cross-border points in Lamu, Garissa and Mandera has blocked the routes used by smugglers, terrorists and human traffickers.

Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia said plans are now underway to allow the fishermen and traders, especially those dealing in khat in the region to resume their cross-border trade despite the border remains closed.

Mr Machaira said he has been receiving complaints from fishermen and other business owners concerning the effects brought about by the existing ban on cross border trade.

The main entering point Lamu was the Kenyans fishing, tourism and key economy point that have collapsed owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

the federal government of Somalia closed its border from Kenyan and also bans khat import since COVID 19 reported in Somalia’s territory amid march 2020.
