The head of Kenya Police said late on Sunday that they caught six men suspected of planning an attack backed by Alshabab fighters in neighbouring country Somalia according to Reuters.

Recently Kenya lost almost 20 security officers through explosions caused by landlines in the vast arid northeastern region bordering Somalia. These landmines are a new strategy used by Alshabab that caught Kenyan security forces by surprise.

The Inspector General of the Police Joseph Boinnet said in a statement that two of the suspects are Somali nationals. Police also seized among others readymade explosives, four suicide vests and highly explosive chemical power known TNT.

“The six had been dispatched from Burhanche in Somalia by their commanders to launch attacks in Kenya” said Bonneit.

In collaboration with their counterparts in Somalia, Kenyan security officers were able to foil the attack and apprehend the suspects. The suspects are undergoing police interrogation to ascertain their extent of operations said the Police Chief.

Kenya has been facing constant threat and security challenges from Alshabbab operating from Somalia since 2011 when Kenya army crossed over to the neigbouring country to fight Alshabab and restore order and law.
