Kenya’s former First Lady Lucy Kibaki passes on

Kenya’s former First Lady Lucy Kibaki has passed on while undergoing treatment in London, the presidency has announced.

In a statement from State House Nairobi, President Uhuru Kenyatta said the former first lady who was the wife of Kenya’s third president Mwai Kibaki passed Tuesday morning in Cromwell Hospital, London.

“It is with deep sense of sadness and loss that I have learnt of the untimely death of the former First Lady, Her Excellency Mrs. Lucy Kibaki. She passed away early this moning while undergoing treatment in Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London,” said Kenyatta.

President Kenyatta said Mrs Kibaki had been undergoing treatment for the past one month both in Kenya and abroad. She was taken to London for further treatment last week where she succumbed to the illness Tuesday morning.

Mrs. Kibaki had been off the public limelight since her husband left office in 2013 when he was succeeded by Kenyatta.

President Kenyatta hailed her for her commitment to improving the well being of ordinary Kenyans in particular with her focus on tackling HIV/AIDS.
