Locals loot AMISOM compound in Marka  town

A military base vacated by African Union Peace-keeping mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops in Marka town was looted hours after AMISOM left the town.

According to reports, local residents ransacked the compound and stole properties of the base.

Al-Shabab fighters took control of Marka town which lies 110km South of Mogadishu on Friday after AMISOM troops under African Union left the areas, barely two weeks after seized two town military base where about sixty soldiers were killed.

According to residents of the towns of Marka forces from the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) pulled out of the town without fight.

Speaking by phone to Goobjoog News local witnesses said the withdrawals were not accompanied by any armed clashes.

As of Friday morning, they said, Al-Shabab militants had assumed control of the town, where they urged local residents to “support the Mujahideen in liberating the country from the invaders”
