Mogadishu mayor Abdirahman Yarisow dies in Qatar

Mogadishu mayor and Banadir governor Abdirahman Omar Osman eng Yarisow passed away on Thursday afternoon in Qatar after he has sustained serious injuries from a suicide attack at his office in Mogadishu last week.

At least six people including three district commissioners and three directors were killed and wounded the mayor of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu Yarisow on a suicide attack at the mayor’s office on 24th July 2019.

The mayor who has sustained serious injuries have been airlifted to Qatar for further treatment.

Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda-linked armed group fighting to overthrow Somalia’s UN-backed government, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The group said the attack was intended to target UN’s special envoy James Swan who had a meeting with the mayor at his office and left just hours before the attack.

The governor Abdirahman Omar Osman aka Engineer Yarisow was appointed in late January 2018 by president Farmaajo after firing governor Thabit Abdi from the city top job.

Governor Osman Yarisow is a veteran in the Somali politics and is actively involved in the government for over a decade holding many positions including ministerial ones.
