National Consultative Forum on electoral process has officially started on Sunday in Mogadishu following the conclusion of the regional consultative forums on the 2016 electoral process last Month.

the forum which is a follow up the outcomes of regional consultative forums is set to reach a consensual decision on the most appropriate electoral process for 2016, ensuring transparency, inclusivity and adequate representation of women, youth and minority groups, who are all part of the consultative process as well.

The meeting was officially opened by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.  The Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Speaker, and the Presidents of Somalia’s existing and emerging Federal member states will also take part in the proceedings, as will a select number of members of Parliament, Federal Ministers, regional Ministers and civil society.

This being a significant event for Somalia, there are web and TV live streaming of plenary sessions for the two days.

Somalia’s Provisional Federal Constitution, adopted in 2012, envisages that the mandates of the Somali Federal Parliament and of the Government come to an end in August and September 2016, respectively.  However, as these institutions declared jointly at the end of July, conditions in Somalia are not yet conducive to the conduct of one-person one-vote elections in 2016.
