NUSOJ opposes newly approved Somali Media Committee

Storyline:National News

National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) has strongly opposed the Somali Media Committee approved by Somali cabinet on Thursday.

In press statement released by the group, it called the committee approved by federal cabinet ‘null and void’.

The group said this is seriously damaging for the independent media and the right to freedom of expression in the country.

NUSOJ called on the Somali Government to urgently review the issue.

Late last year, Somalia’s parliament passed a controversial media bill proposed by the government, saying it aims to regulate the nation’s media industry.

It also instructs media outlets including newspapers to register with the government and pay annual license fees.
