One dies as protest erupts in Las Anod town, Northern Somalia

The breakaway Somaliland’s soldiers have allegedly killed two civilians and injured fours other on Sunday following eruption of violent demonstration in Las Anod town of Sool region.

Hundreds of irate protesters took to the streets of the town protesting against the death Dahabshil Accountant-General in South and Central Somalia who was gunned down in the town.

The rally began peacefully but drastically escalated when the angry crowds gathered and raided the police station.

The police used live bullets as clashes broke out at the end, promoting death of a civilian and wounded four others, according eyewitness.

Tensions have been reportedly high as civilians burned tires blocking main roads of the city, subsequently local authority deployed army forces to revive the situation and restore order.

The youths had marched through the streets of the town denouncing the police for beating up protesters.

“We have been seeing a deliberate attempt by the police to intimidate, harass and silence the people,” said Siraad Abdi, one of the protesters.
