Parliamentary leadership candidates make speeches to lower House members

Candidates contesting for the speaker of Somalia’s Lower House have concluded their campaign speech before Somali parliamentarians on Sunday.

Four candidates contesting for the speaker have presented their concluding speeches in the presence of the over 270 recently sworn in Somali parliament members who Sunday held the special session to listen to the speeches of parliamentary leadership candidates.

The qualified candidates who are allowed to compete in the elections were allotted 15 minutes each to present to parliament their political philosophies.

Among the candidates running for the parliament leadership is former parliament speaker, Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari who presented his speech before the members.

Over 20 candidates contesting for first and second deputies are expected conclude their speeches ahead of the expected ballot on the 11th of this month.

House Speaker election will now take place on 11th of January while one of the first and second deputy speaker of the House will be held from Oct. 12th of January for the Lower house, according to House leadership election commission.

After the election of the parliamentary leadership, the lawmakers will elect the country’s president on a date to be set later.

Over twenty candidates are running to become Somalia’s president who will then choose a prime minister.

The incumbent Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud is among dozens of candidates vying for the post of president, who will be elected by new lawmakers.
