Prime Minister Abdirashid Omar Sharmarke has warned against what he termed as foreign influence in the upcoming president elections.

Speaking in a media conference in Mogadishu alongside opposition presidential candidates, Sharmarke who is also contesting for presidency alluded to attempts by neighbouring countries contributing troops to Amisom to influence the February 8 presidential vote.

“There are challenges and interference from neighboring countries. Somalia is an independent country and I believe the Somali Parliament will is determined to ensure a new government is formed. Amisom has continued to provide security and I believe in due course they will be able to hand over to the Somali security forces,” said Sharmarke.

Sharmarke said the neighbouring countries have done a good work in providing forces to Amisom but they should not take advantage of the situation to influence the country’s politics.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid claims foreign countries were supporting particular candidates. Similar claims have also emerged of the United Arab Emirates and Kenya banking on a Sharmarke presidency.
