Pomp and colour as military commandos pass out in Mogadishu
The elite military commandos today passed out in a colourful ceremony at the Jazeera military complex after month-long tough military training involving tens of highly trained Special Forces.
The ceremony which was attended by the defence minister, heads of army units and military trainers marked a significant step towards the reclamation of the Somali military which boasted military reputation matched by a few countries in Africa before the collapse of government in 1991.
Despite the loss of its reputation following the anarchy that ravaged the country for over two decades; the Somali National Army is now rebuilding itself into a professional and strong army through trainings and collaboration with elite military groups internationally.
In April the state of Puntland pledged 3,000 soldiers to join the Somali National Army as part of the force integration process following the Garowe conference agreement.
The reliance on elite squads has become increasingly popular especially with the changing global security situation characterised by terrorism and cyber-crime which call for highly trained and effective police and military units.
The US trained elite squad Alpha Group has been instrumental in neutralising terror attack in the city with their close range hit capability enabling them close in on terrorists within a short time.
