President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo has today laid the foundation stone to re-build the National Theatre.

Villa Somalia head of communications Abdinur Mohamed Ahmed said the rebuilding of the theatre will be concluded within one year.

“The president promised to complete the rebuilding of the National Theater in a short time, and expect the artists to present their creativity,” Ahmed said.

Ahmed said the rebuilding is being implemented under the self-help (sxilqaan) programme launched last month by the government which aims at citizen participation in rebuilding national institutions.

Many Somali artists, actors and singers have fled the violence over the last two decades, especially as al Shabaab cracked down on any forms of art they deemed un-Islamic.

  1. Splendid! I hope the quality of construction will be tightly controlled ad supervised. After all, this is our National Theater, a place where up to a thousand people are supposed to gather to enjoy performances. We certainly don’t want any security risks related to poor building standards, so typical these days around Somalia, unfortunately.
