President Mohamud: AMISOM to vacate Mogadishu Stadium and Gaheyr University

Storyline:National News

Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamed yesterday night speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 3rd anniversary since his election in 2012 said he has agreed with AMISOM peacekeepers to vacate Stadium Mogadishu and Gaheyr University.

This is to make way for major sporting events in the country and learning space for students at Somali National University (Gaheyr) which has been reopened.

AMISOM has been using these facilities for 5 years now as a military base.

For Stadium Mogadishu, the biggest sporting facility in the country served as perfect sanctuary for the peacekeepers that came under constant attacks while Alshabab was still controlling parts of the city.

Calls from The Somali Football Federation for AMISOM to vacate the stadium have fallen on deaf ears.

The federation said the militarization of the stadium has hindered sporting activities and tournaments in the recovering Somalia.

But the president did not comment on Kismayo University where AMISOM has a big base.
