Presidential elections committee commences registration of candidates

The presidential election committee started the registration of presidential candidates Thursday clearing former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed for the February poll.

The committee said it had received the requisite documentation and election fee of $30,000 from Ahmed and handed him a certificate of participation as candidate for elections slated for February 8.

The exercise will conclude on Sunday upon which the committee will meet January Sunday to deliberate on the electoral modalities.

Over 15 candidates are expected to contest for presidency among them the incumbent Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Abdirashid Omar Sharmarke.
