Storyline:National News, Security

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) has officially established legal proceedings at Mogadishu’s Regional Court to seek court orders for the investigations and prosecution of suspected killers of more than 50 journalists in Somalia.

In a press conference, NUSOJ declared that Somalia authorities cannot overcome the harsh practices used against its journalists that have resulted to some of the journalists to flee from the country in the course of impunity without carrying fair, speedy, and adequate investigation to reveal the truth and seek justice for murdered journalists and other harassment.

According to NUSOJ statement, the assassinations of journalists are not only violations of international human rights law but also violations of article 13 (right to life) and Article 18 (freedom of expression and opinion) of the provisional constitution of Somalia.

The coalition further indicated that the investigation of deadly attacks on journalists requires particular sensitivity and accountability to ensure that the link between the crime and the journalists are visible.
