Rain damages roads in Lower Shabelle

The sky opened and dumped heavy rain on parts of Lower Shabelle overnight, many roads leading to Qoryooley, Marka and other towns in the region to have been damaged.

The receding flood water in Gandarshe town has badly damaged many roads, cutting off communications between the town and several towns in the region in the last 24 hours.

Many roads have been severely damaged in downpours, causing travel disruptions due to road closures.

Heavy rainfall is to blame for the rising water levels in the Shabelle and Juba rivers, which have burst their banks, destroying farmlands in the regions of Lower Shabelle, Middle Shabelle, Lower Juba.

The administration of Gandarshe town has stated that the condition of the residents in the town is getting worst day after day since Wednesday.

“It is about two days since floods of torrential rains cut off and badly damaged roads leading to the town, the price of basic items have shot up dramatically,” said local administrator in the area.

He pointed out that  the town has suffered as a result of increasing number of roadblocks mounted by armed gunmen who impose levies on vehicles transporting foodstuff to the market.

“More than 10 roadblocks have been set up on the roads leading to the town,” he said.
