Reprieve for Somalis as Biden reverses ‘Muslim Ban’

Storyline:National News, World

GOOBJOOG NEWS|WASHINGTON:    Somalis will now travel to the United States freely thanks to the lifting of a travel ban by President Joe Biden who took office Wednesday.

Upon swearing in, Biden reversed the Trump era ban dubbed the ‘Muslim Ban’ which restricted travel by Somalis and nationals of other Muslim majority countries.

Though the executive order was largely gagged by US courts including the supreme court, sections of it including the ‘Muslim Ban’ remained in force making it near impossible for citizens from the seven countries to enter the US.

Executive Order 13769 barred nationals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen from entering the United States. The order was upheld by the Supreme Court in a 5-4 vote on June 26, 2018.

Biden also signed executive orders instructing the US to rejoin the World Health Organisation and the Paris Climate. Other orders include the undoing of expansion of immigration enforcement within the United States.
