Security conference on Somalia kicks off in Brussels

A High Level Security Meeting on Somalia has today opened in Brussels, Belgium aimed at reviewing and supporting the transitional plan from Amisom to Somali Security Forces as the African Union forces gradually exit Somalia after a decade.

Prime Minister Hassan Khaire who is leading a government delegation is expected to brief the conference on the progress of the Transitional Plan which was mooted following the London Conference last May.

The Plan which takes into consideration a phased exit of Amisom forces aims to gradually build, train the security forces and integrate militia groups into the mainstream security forces in addition to enhancing equipment and logistical support.

Amisom withdrew 1,000 troops from Somalia last December and a further 1,000 are expected to exit the country October in line with the UN Security Council last August.

Somali ambassador to the EU Mohamed Faqi told journalists Wednesday the meeting will be exploring issues regarding building the military and preparing for transition. The government will also present the pilot projects within the framework of the Somalia Transition Plan;

African Union Peace and Security Council said Tuesday the transition must take into consideration inherent challenges to ensure an effective transition.

“Council stresses that the full implementation of the Somalia Transition Plan is dependent on fully addressing the challenges raised by the Operational Readiness Assessment of regional forces, completion of discussions on the Somali troop generation, training, integration, accommodation, equipment and logistical support for the tasks related to the transition.”
