Senate forms committee to resolve ongoing political stalemate

The Senate Saturday established an ad hoc committee to mediate in the ongoing political stalemate in the country pitying Lower House Speaker Mohamed Jawari and Prime Minister Hassan Khaire.

The Senate Business Committee (SBC) appointed a seven member team headed by speaker Abdi Hashi to help in resolving the dispute as MPs allied to the Prime Minister Saturday said they would proceed with the no confidence motion against Jawari.

“The committee has been formed in accordance with article 61 (1) of the Constitution,” Senator Ali Jama said while presenting the resolution of the Business Committee. Article 61 (1) obliges members of the Federal Parliament to be ‘guided by the best interests of the nation as a whole while fulfilling their duties’.

The SBC called on their counterparts in the Lower House to ‘address any misunderstanding and conflict in accordance with the constitution and House Standing Orders’ and urged the committee  of the Lower House to work in ensuring the stability of the House.

“We call on all parties in this conflict to work with this committee,” the SBC added. “We also call on sectors of the country and government institutions to work for the stability of the country in regards to the Lower House issue.”
