Somali National Security Council winds up meeting in Mogadishu

Following the official meeting of the Somali National Security Council made up of federal and regional government officials which took place from 5th to 10th July 2017. The meeting was chaired by the President of the Federal of Somalia Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.

The participants included the Prime Minister of Somalia Hassan Ali Kheyre, his deputy Mahdi Mohamed Guleed, Presidents of regional governments, governor of Banadir region and several Federal Ministers, Generals of the Armed Forces, and the National Security Advisor among others.

A Press Release was produced when the meeting was concluded by Somali National Security Council through the Federal Minister for Defense Abdirashid Abdullahi Ahmed which contained several points among them:

  • Somali National Security Council applauded the excellent security work by the Federal government namely stabilizing the city, politics and strengthening the link between Federal authority and regional governments.
  • After the Somali National Security Council assessed the security situation in the country, they unanimously agreed upon working in unison on the national security affairs and to produce a united front against those suspected of funding, sheltering or broadcasting their malevolent doctrines perpetuated by Alshabab fighters.
  • When the Somali National Security Council reviewed the agreement on security agreement on the 16th-17th June 2017 and listened to the diverse opinions proposed by its sub-committees on Defense and Security of Somali Parliament and therefore considered their opinions based on the National Security.
  • Somali National Security Council agreed upon to create a Technical Committee to work on the system of the National Security including the structure of the security forces, police and prison rehabilitation warders. The committee members will be made up of Federal authority, regional governments and Banadir administration.
  • Somali National Security Council clearly understands the need for developing the federal system, review of the draft constitution and elections based on one vote, one person in the year 2020. To implement these issues, they agreed upon to do through constant consultation in every 3 months.
  • The council ratified upon the law that enacts that Somali National Security Council to be tabled in the Somali Parliament according to the code Act 111 section (h) in the draft constitution.
  • Somali National Security Council endorsed an agreement on meeting protocols and implementing policies of the National Security.
  • Meeting for the Somali National Security Council will be held after every 3 months.
