Speaking at a ceremony for the commemoration of 42nd university when the Somali Language was first written, the President of Somalia Hassan Sheik Mohamud has announces today (Wednesday) the use of Somalia Language in the official documents at every government office throughout the country.
He outlawed the use of foreign languages other than the Somali language in the official documents, saying “Foreign languages should only be used when communicating to foreign countries and nationals”
The president also announced plans to enforce education curriculum which Somali Language should be medium of instructions, to renovate national museum, monuments for fallen Somali heroes which uses to exist, and also to establish regional Somali Language Academy which was agreed among states including Somalia, Djibouti, and Ethiopia’s Somali regional administration.
“According to UNESCO Somali is in the cross border languages category in the world, this is a big achievement, and we should upheld it” said the president adding that “There is a no country in the world which achieved substantial development without the official use of its indigenous language”
Efforts to have written Somali language started in the year 1922 when Osman Yusuf Kenedid, one of the Somali clan chieftaincies introduced his own alphabet for Somali, but it was only in 1972 when the written Somali word was officially introduced by the late President Siyad Barre.
Bare enforced the Somali into almost everything in the country, from official documents to educational books; even post stamps carried the written Somali words. But since the collapse of central government in 1991 there were little efforts to advance the use of the language.
Today in the age of technology, there is a great need for Somali commission or academy to come up Somali terminology to name the new devices and scientific discoveries.
