Special Forces unit Danab Tuesday wrestled control of four villages in Balaa’d district in Lower Shabelle regions from the militant group Al-Shabaab.

Balaad District commissioner Nuur Shueb quoted by the state news agency SONNA said the forces had taken control of Daniga, Barwaqo, Garasweyn and Walamoy villages after the militants fled as the forces approached.

The district official said the government forces were now in control of the four villages which Al-Shabaab had been in control of.

The forces will now proceed to Basra, the official said.

The capture of the villages adds to several other villages and towns liberated by Somali and African Union forces in the Lower Shabelle which has remained a major stronghold of Al-Shabaab.
