Somaliland Voter Listing Set To Start on 16th January

The breakaway Somaliland’s electoral commission will conduct voter registration with the help opposition and ruling parties, starting 16th January.

The commission’s CEO Abdikadir Iman Warsame says they will kick off the exercise early to ensure there is sufficient time to compile the register and minimize errors as those witnessed in the last Election.

“We are getting into voter registration phase and we will be taking a nationwide voter registration exercise which will kick off on 16th January,” said Iman.

He said the commission would deploy election clerks to ensure every prospective voter gets the message so as to make the exercise successful.

The leader of Somaliland Ahmed Mohamed has also announced 16 January as the start date for voter registration for presidential elections.

“Considering submissions by the electoral commission, the president of the republic of Somaliland declares 16 January as the start date for voter registration.” said a statement from Silanyo’s office Sunday.

Somaliland has earlier announced that it will hold presidential elections in 2016, amid political uncertainty over the current presidential controversial term extension last year which sparked protests and counter-accusations by the government and opposition parties.

Somaliland, a breakaway region in northern Somalia has declared a unilateral independence from the rest of Somalia in 1991, however, its attempts to gain an international recognition hasn’t so far accomplished success.
