UN and AU congratulate Somalia’s new parliament speaker

The re-election of former parliament leader, Mohamed Osman Jawari as the speaker of the federal parliament has been welcomed by UN and African Union.

The re-election of  Jawari which took place at a heavily-guarded parliament building in the capital Mogadishu as he managed to secure 141 votes from 259 MPs, enough for a first-round victory.

Following the election of Jawaari, UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) on its twitter said Congratulations to all Somalis for reaching this momentous point in the nation’s development.

“AMISOM congratulates Prof. Mohamed Osman Jawari on his election as Speaker of the House of the People of Somalia’s 10th Federal Parliament,” said African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

The new speaker will lead the house for four years until January 2021.

Prof Jawari who was born in 1945 in Afgoye town worked for the Somali government during the civilian government of the 1960s.

He also work for the socialist government led late Mohamed Siyad Barre between 1970s and 1980s.

Jawari whose previous term as speaker stirred by political wrangling  slow legislative progress has pull up his socks to transform Somalia’s parliament which plagued p, but he cemented his reputation as an outspoken politician who took a tough stance on disputes in parliament.

He promised to lead the house of the people with integrity.

The lower house consists of 275 members while the upper house is made up of 54 members.
